What is Konami Code and How to use It?
The Konami Code, known in Japan as the Konami Command, is a cheat code that appears in many Konami video games, although the code also appears in some non-Konami games. The code was first used in the 1986 release of Gradius for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) but was made famous in North America in the NES version of Contra, for which it was also dubbed the “30 Lives Code”.
While pausing the game or during the title screen, the player could press the following sequence of buttons on the game controller : “↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A”
The code was subsequently re-used in a large number of other games, and has found a place in popular culture as a reference to the third generation of video game consoles. Now it also used by many web designers to enable special actions or secret pages.

Thanks for featuring my site, Anders! I didn’t know anything about the use of the Konami code in web design until I stumble upon KonamiCodeSites.com :) that’s where designers are encouraged to include it as part of their design and submit their sites to be listed.
While some may argue that the Konami code adds some unnecessary bulk to a site due to the extra few lines of JS and perhaps, a few more for the modal window (or any other actions, like expansion of comment replies in Digg) – I think it’s an interesting eye candy to have.

That is crazy! Man, there’s a whole other world that is unknown to most of us non-designers and techies. Great post, definitely a refresher and something unique to read.
I can’t beleive it that’s a classic trick for anyone who plays on Snes or N64 I always remember ISS98 where you had to do the code plus stick up and down R and L to get the stars teams.
