How to Create a Detailed Vector Iron in Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator can be a little tricky to get your hands around, particularly after getting used to the workflow of applications like Photoshop. The differences between layer use and the creation of objects and shapes can be really strange at first hand.

In the following steps you will learn how to create a Detailed Vector Iron in Adobe Illustrator. This tutorial uses many different vector techniques including the Appearance Panel, Transparency Settings, Clipping Mask and some simple effects (Gaussian Blur, Glass…).

Create A Detailed Vector Iron in Illustrator

Step 1: Create a Base

Create a 800px by 800px, RGB document. Now pick the Pen Tool (P) and create a shape as shown below. Next fill the shape with the linear gradient.

Continue with the Pen Tool. Use this tool to create a black shape as shown in the first image. Then fill it with the linear gradient.

Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a 160px by 280px shape. Fill the ellipse shape with the radial gradient and add a 10px stroke (10% black). Next set the stroke as shown below.

Step 2: Creating the Handle

Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a black shape as shown in the first image. Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) this shape one time. Next fill the copy with R=0, G=174, B=239. Finally, press (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket) once time to send backward the copy.

Select two points of the remaining black shape as shown in the first image and then click on the "Cut path at seleted anchor points" button in the Properties bar. Next remove the right part and then set the remaining part as shown in the third image below.

Select and duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the blue shape once time. While the copy selected, replace the existing fill color with a gradient shown below. Next go to the Effect menu/ Distort/ Glass…
Enter the data shown below and click OK. Finally, lowered its Opacity to 30%

Use the Pen tool (P) to create a red shape as shown below and then fill it with the linear gradient.

Keep working with the Pen Tool (P). Use this tool to create a red shape as shown in the first image. Next fill this shape with R=0, G=174, B=239.

Select and duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the newly created shape once time. Next fill the copy with R=0, G=133, B=184. Move this shape to the right a bit and press (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket) once time.

Use the Pen tool (P) to create a red shape as shown below.

Fill the newly created shape with R=0, G=110, B=153. Go to the Effect/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter the data shown below and then click OK. Next press (Ctrl+2) to lock this shape.

Select the shape as shown in the first image below and then duplicate it once time. Next bring the copy to front (Ctrl + Shift + Right Square Bracket). While the copy selected, click on the shape blured in the previous step and go to the Object menu/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7).

Use the Pen tool (P) to create a pink shape as shown below. Then fill the newly created shape with the radial gradient.

Continue draw a new shape as shown below. Fill this shape with the linear gradient. Then go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 5px Radius and then click OK. Next lowered Opacity of the result to 30%.

Select the shape as shown in the first image below and duplicate it once time. Next bring the copy to front (Ctrl + Shift + Right Square Bracket). Fill the copy with none and add a 3px stroke (80% black) Next select two anchor points of the result as shown in the second image and then click on the "Cut path at seleted anchor points" button in the Properties bar. Next remove the left part and then set the stroke of the remaining part as shown in the third image below.

Create a yellow shape as shown below. Duplicate this shape once time and hide the copy (Ctrl+3). Next fill the remaning yellow shape with the linear gradient.

Press (Ctrl + Shift + 3) to show the copy. Next remove the right part of this shape and then set the stroke as shown in the second image.

Now pick the Pen tool (P) and use this tool to create a red shape as shown in the first image. Fill this shape with black and go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 15px Radius and then click OK. Finally, send this shape to back (Ctrl + Shift + Left Square Bracket).

Create a red shape as shown below and then fill it with the linear gradient.

While the result selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter the data as shown and click OK. Next lowered its Opacity to 70% and set the Blending mode is Multiply.

Create a red shape as shown in the first image below and then fill the shape with white. While the shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter the data as shown and click OK. Next lowered Opacity of the result to 50% and then set the Blending mode is Overlay.

Select two shapes as shown in the first image below and duplicate them once time. Next click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder palette. Bring the result to front (Ctrl +Shift+ Right Square Bracket). While the result selected, click on the white shape blured in the previous step and go to the Object menu/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7).

Pick the Pen tool (P). Next use this tool to create shapes and fill them as shown below.

Step 3: Creating the Temperature Controller

Pick the Ellipse tool (L) and use it to create a 75px by 100px shape. Next use the Pen tool (P) and create a red shape as shown in the second image below. Next press (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket) once time to send this shape backward.

Fill the yellow shape with the linear gradient. While the result selected, go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. Enter a 1px Offset and then click OK. Next replace the existing color of the result with a linear gradient shown below.

Fill the red shape with the linear gradient.

Create a red curve and then set the stroke of it as shown in the second image

Continue create three yellow shapes as shown in the first image below. Next fill them with the linear gradient.

Use the Pen tool (P) to create a red curve. Next set the stroke of this curve as shown in the second image below. While the result selected, go to the Object menu/ Expand Appearance. Next duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the result once time and hide (Ctrl+3) the copy.

Fill the red shape with the linear gradient.

Press (Ctrl +Shift+3) to show the red shape. Next fill this shape with none and and a 1px Stroke (red color). From this shape create three curves as shown in the second image.

Set three curves as shown in the fisrt image below. Then go to the Object menu/ Expand Appearance. Next fill the blur shape with R=65, G=255, B=255 and fill the yellow shape with R=0, G=181, B=255.

Fill the red shape with the linear gradient. Next pick the Type tool (T) and create a letter "Off” and then rotate it as shown in the second image below.

Create shapes and then fill them as shown below.

Continue create a red and fill it with the radial gradient.

Duplicate (Ctrl +C, Ctrl+F) the shape just created in previous step once time. Replace the existing color of the copy with 90% black. Next move the result 1px down and then move it 1px to the left. Finaly, press (Ctrl+Left Square Bracket) once time to send it backward. Now create a red shape as shown in the second image and fill it with 100% black. Next lowered its Opacity to 10%

Step 4: Adding Grips on Handle and Styles on Exterior

Now create the red shapes as shown below.

Select any red shape and fill it with the linear gradient as shown below. Next do the same for the remaining red shapes.

Now use the Pen tool (P) (setting: Fill = None; Stroke: Weight = 0.5px, 70% black) to create a shape as shown in the first image below. Next do the same for remaining shapes to get the result as shown in the second image below.

Pick the Ellipse tool (L) and use it to create shapes (Fill: 70% black, Stroke=None) as shown below. Select and group (Ctrl+G) all ellipse shapes. Next duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) this group once time. Replace the existing fill color of the newly created group with 10% black. Finally move this group1px down and move 1px to the left.

Step 5: Creating the Power Cord

Pick the Pen tool (P) and then use it to create a red shape as shown below.

Continue create a yellow shape and then send this shape to back (Ctrl+Shift+Left Square Bracket).

Switch to the Pen tool (P) and create a blue shape as shown below.

Fill the blue shape with R=0, G=59, B=135 (Stroke = None). Create a white shape as shown in the first image and then fill it with R= 0, G= 227, B=255. Next go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 15px Radius and then click OK.

Select the dark blur shape as shown below and then duplicate (Ctrl +C, Ctrl +F) it once time. Bring the copy to front (Ctrl + Shift + Right Square Bracket). Next duplicate the newly created shape once time and then hide the copy (Ctrl+3). Now select the remaining dark blur shape and the shape just blured and then go to the Object menu/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7).

Now press (Ctrl+Shift+3) to show the dark blue shape. Next fill this shape with R=0, G=120, B=255. While the result selected, go to the Effect menu/ Distort/ Glass… Enter the data shown below and then click OK.

Repeat the same techniques for the remaining two shapes (the yellow and the red shape).

Select and duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) three dark blur shapes once time. Replace the existing fill color of the copies with black and lowered their Opacity to 90%. Next go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 8px Radius and then click OK. While the results selected, move them 4px down and then send them to back (Ctrl+Shift+Left Square Bracket)

Use the Pen tool (P) to create a red shape as shown in the first image below. Next fill it with the linear gradient.

Continue create four yellow shapes as shown below. Then select and group (Ctrl+G) newly created shapes. Fill this group with the linear gradient.

While the result selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 4.6px Radius and then click OK.

Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the shape selected once time. Replace the existing color of the copy with black. Next go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter a 4.6 px in the Radius section and then click OK. Next lowered Opacity of the result to 90%. Finally, move the shape 1px up and then move it 3px to the left.

Select the white shape and duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) it once time. Fill the copy with None and add a 1px stroke (60% black). Select two anchor points highlight with yellow and then click on the "Cut path at selected archor points" button from the Properties bar. Next remove the top part. Reselect the remaining shape and set the Profile section is Width Profile 1.

Select and group (Ctrl + G) three shapes just created. Next duplicate this group once time and then move the copy to the correct position as shown below.

Select all shapes that we see in the previous image and rotate them an angle of about -80 degrees.

Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the shape selected as shown in the first image once time. Next replace the existing color of the copy with black. Go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter the data as shown below and then click OK. Next send it to back (Ctrl +Shift+ Left Square Bracket). Finally, move it 4px down and then move it 1px to the left.

Create a red shape as shown below. Next fill the newly created shape with black (Stroke=None). While the result selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. Enter the data as shown below and then click OK. Next lowered Opacity of the result to 20%.

In the end your shape should look roughly like the image below.

Now we create a background for the iron shape. Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and use this tool to create a 700px by 750px shape. Next fill the newly created shape with the radial gradient.
