Create Cute Characters in Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator can be a little tricky to get your hands around, particularly after getting used to the workflow of applications like Photoshop. The differences between layer use and the creation of objects and shapes can be really strange at first hand.

In the following tutorial you will learn how to create cute characters illustration. We will use basic tools and simple techniques (Pathfinder, Gradient, Clipping Mask, Mesh etc..) to create basic shapes, fill them, and add Adobe Illustrator effects, which will combine to create the final illustration.

Step 1:

Create a 1200px by 800px, RGB document.

PART 1: Create a Boy

Step 2: Head of boy

1. Pick the Ellipse tool (L) and use it to create a 290 by 360px shape. Duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the resulting shape selected, hold down the Shift key and press the left arrow key eight times. Reselect the created shape in the first step. Then pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on two points highlighted with yellow. Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select the anchor point highlighted with red and remove it. Next use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) adjust handles of anchor points highlighted with yellow to get the result as shown in the final image below.

2. Fill shapes with linear gradient.

3. Reselect the shape selected in the image below and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the shape next to it. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

4. Reselect the shape selected in the image below and duplicate it once time again (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Use the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) to add anchor points highlighted with yelow and magenta. Then move anchor points highlighted with magenta to positions as shown in the second image. Reselect the shape selected in the first step and fill it with a linear gradient.

5. Pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and add an anchor point highlighted with yellow. Then select and remove the anchor point highlighted with red. Now pick the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) and use it to adjust the right handle of anchor point highlighted with yellow. In the end your shape should look roughly like the third image.

6. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a shape as shown below. Then fill this shape with a radial gradient. Finally lowered its Opacity to 90%

7. Use the Pen Tool (P) create a shape as shown below and fill it with a 30% black color.

8. Now pick the Mesh Tool (U) and click on the position in the point highlighted with red. Then use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) to adjust handles of anchor points highlighted with yellow and red to get result as the second image. Finally use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select anchor points highlighted with yellow and red and then fill them as shown in the second image. The final result should look like the final image below.

9. Do the same steps to create the shapes as shown below

11. Now, select the shape selected in the first image below and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and use it to add two anchor points highlighted with yellow. Then remove two anchor points highlighted with red. Reselect anchor points highlighted with yellow and press the up arrow key twice times. Finally reselect the shape selected at first in this step and fill it with the dark brown color.

12. Do the same as the above step to get result as shown below

Step 3: Eye for boy.

1. Use the Ellipse Tool (L) create a ellipse shape as shown in the first image. Then fill this shape with a radial gradient. With the resulting shape selected, go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. In the Offset Path box, enter a -6px Offset and click OK. Change the color of the resulting shape to black (stroke=None). Finally, move it to correct position as shown in the final image below.

2. Select the black shape and go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. In the Offset Path box, enter a -4px Offset and click OK. Then go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. In the Gaussian Blur, enter a 5.2px Radius and click OK.

3. With the resulting shape selected, go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. In the Offset Path box, enter a -4px Offset and click OK. Change the color of the resulting shape to 85% black. Then move it to possition as shown in the final image below.

4. Double-click on the Star Tool from the Tool pallete. In the Star box, set data as shown below and click OK. Fill the resulting shape with 85% black color (stroke = None) and reduce its Opacity to 40%.

5. Use the Ellipse Tool (L) create ellipse shapes as shown in images below

6. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it create a curve and then set data of it as shown below.

7. Select all shapes in the step B3 and group them. Reduce the size of this group and place it in the position as shown below.

Step 4: Mouth of boy.

1. Use the Pen Tool (P) create a shape as shown in the first image. Duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Then change the color of the resulting shape to white and press Ctrl + 3 to hide it. Reselect the shape selected at first in this step. Then select two anchor points highlighted with yellow and click on the "Cut path at selected anchor points" button from the Properties bar. This will create two curves.

2. Set data for two curves as shown below. Now use the Ellipse Tool (L) to create a circle shape and place it as shown in the second image. Then press (Ctrl+Alt+3) to show the shape hidden in the above step. Duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and hide the resulting shape (Ctrl+3). Resect the white shape and the circle shape and press the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel.

3. Fill the resulting shape with R=96, G=57, R=19 and send it to back (Ctrl + Shift + Left Square Bracket). Then press (Ctrl + Alt + 3) to show the shape hidden and fill it with R=35, G=31, B=32. Finally send it to back (Ctrl + Shift + Left Square Bracket).

4. Reselect the shape edited in the previous step and go to the Object menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Follow the data in the Drop Shadow box shown below . Now we’ll create two teeth for the boy. Pick the Pen Tool (P), use it to create two white shapes. Fill newly created shapes with linear gradient.

5. Select all shapes in the step B4 and group them. Reduce the size of this group and place it in the position as shown below.

Step 5: Create a washproof

1. Double-click on the Rounded Rectangle Tool and enter the data in the Rounded Rectangle box shown below. With the resulting shape selected, go to the Object menu/ Expand. Fill the resulting shape with R=230, G=231, B=232. Then duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Fill the resulting shape with R=117, G=76, B=41, send it backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket). Finally resize it a bit as shown in the final image.

2. Create a circle shape by the Ellipse Tool (L) and fill it with orange color. Create similar circle shapes, then group them and place them as shown in the fourth image below. Reselect the lighter rounded shape and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the circles group. Then go to the Object menu/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7).

3. Create a rectangle shape and a heart shape as shown below. Then select all shapes created in the step B5 and group them. Rotate this group about 35 degree. Finally reduce the size of this group and place it in the position as shown below

Step 6: Create the shorts.

1. Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create two rectangle shape. Duplicate the white shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and place shapes in the correct position as shown in the second image. Then select all three shapes and click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel.

2. Use the Ellipse Tool (L) and create a ellipse shape. Duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and place them in the correct position as shown in the second image. Then select all three shapes and press the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

3. With the resulting shape selected, go to the Object menu/ Transform/ Move. Then follow the data shown below.

4. Duplicate the resulting shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). With the newly created shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the shape next to it. Then press the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Finally ungroup the resulting shape.

5. Select resulting shapes and move anchor points highlighted with yellow to positions highlighted with red.

6. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create two white shapes as shown below.

7. Fill shapes with colors as shown below.

8. Select two white shapes and duplicate them once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Then press (Ctrl + 3) to hide resulting shapes. Reselect two white shapes selected from beginning this step and fill them with radial gradient (Stroke color: R=141, G=198, B=63)

9. Show two white shapes hidden in the previous step (Ctrl + Alt + 3). Use the Direct Selecttion Tool (A) to select anchor points highlighted with red and click on the "Cut path at selected anchor points" button from Properties bar. At this time, we have four white curves created from two white shapes. Remove two curves to get result as shown in the second image. Select two remaining curves and follow the data in the Stroke panel shown below.

Step 7: Create hands

1. Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create a rectangle shape as shown in the first image. Duplicate this shape twice times (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and place all newly created shapes in the correct positions as shown in the second image below.

2. Select the shape selected as shown in the first image below and duplicate it once time. While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the rectangle shape next to it. Then click on the Minus Back button from the Pathfinder panel.

3. While the resulting shape selected, move anchor points highlighted with red to positions highlighted with yellow.

4. Fill newly created shapes as shown below. Then reselect two newly colored shapes edited in the previous step and press (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket) several times to send them backward as shown in the second image.

5. Do the same to get result as shown below.

Step 8: Legs for boy.

Pick the Rectangle Tool (M), use it to create a shape and fill this shape as shown in the first image. Duplicate the newly created shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F), then move the resulting shape a few pixels to the right and the up. Finally send it backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket)

Step 9: Create socks

1. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a black shape. Then use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) adjust the black shape to get result as shown in the second image below.

2. Fill the resulting shape with a linear gradient.

3. Reselect the newly filled shape and duplicate it once time. Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select anchor point highlighted with red and remove it. Then select two anchor points highlighted with yellow and move them to positions highlighted with green. Finally fill the resulting shape with liner gradient as shown in the final image below.

4. Select all shapes created in the step B8 and step B9 and group them. Then duplicate this group once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and move the resulting group to correct position as shown in the image below.

Step 10: Create shoes

1. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a black shape as shown below. Then pick the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift + C) and adjust the right handle of anchor point highlighted with red to get the result as shown in the second image.

2. Fill the resulting shape with the radial gradient.

3. Duplicate the resulting shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the newly created shape selected, press the down arrow key eight times and then send it backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket). Finally fill it with the radial gradient as shown in the second image.

4. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a black shape as shown below. While the resulting shape selected, pick the Eyedropper Tool (I) and click on the shape created in the previous step.

5. Duplicate the resulting shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and fill the newly created with black. Then use the Selection Tool (V) to reselect the resulting shape and press the up arrow key once time. Finally lowered its Opacity to 30% and send it backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket).

6. Do the same to get the result as shown in the fourth image below.

7. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a shape as shown in the first image and fill it with R=161 ,G=71 ,B=0. Then pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create four ellipse shapes. Fill them with R=142, G=79, B=27 and add a 1px stroke (R=60, G=36, B=21)

8. Pick the Pen Tool (P) (Fill=None, 2px Stroke with 5% black color) and use it to create two curves as shown in the first image. Continue with the Pen Tool (P), use it to create two straight lines and change stroke color of two lines to black. Finally lowered their Opacity to 60% and send them backward (Ctrl+ Left Square Bracket).

9. Keep working with the Pen Tool (P) (Fill=None, 2px Stroke with 5% black color). Use this tool to create a curve as shown in the first image below. Then duplicate the newly created curve once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Change color stroke of the resulting curve to black and move anchor points highlighted with yellow of this curve to left and down a bit. Finally lowered its Opacity to 40% and send it backward (Ctrl+ Left Square Bracket).

10. Do the same to get the result as shown in the final image below.

11. Select sole of the shoe shape and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Fill the newly created shape with black and send it backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket).While the resulting shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gausian Blur. Follow the data in the Gaussian Blur box shown in the third image below.

12. Select all shapes created in the step B10 and group them. While this group selected, double-click on the Reflect Tool icon from the Tool pallete. Follow the data in the Reflect box as shown below and click Copy. Place the resulting group in the correct position as shown below.

13. Remove a shoelace from the newly created shoe and then create new shoelace as shown below.

PART 2: Create a Girl

Step 12: Head of Girl.

1. Use the Rectangle Tool (M) to create two shapes as shown below. Select both two shapes and click on the Vertical Align Center button and then click on the Horizontal Align Center button from the Align panel. Reselect the white shape, hold down Shift and press the right arrow key six times. Now reselect both two shapes again and duplicate them once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the resulting shapes selected, click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel and then send them backward (press "Ctrl + Left Square Bracket" twice times). Now reselect the black shape and use the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) click on the point highlighted with yellow. Finally pick the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) and adjust the right handle of the newly created anchor point as shown in the final image below.

2. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a magenta shape as shown below.

3. Duplicate the magenta shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the white ellipse shape. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

4. Reselect the magenta shape and duplicate it once time again. While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the black circle shape. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

5. Fill two newly created shapes with linear gradient.

6. Fill the magenta shape with the radial gradient. Then fill the white shape with the radial gradient.

7. Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the shape selected in the first image and bring it to front (Ctrl+Shift+Right Square Bracket). While the resulting shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Enter the data in the Drop Shadow box as shown below and click OK.

8. Lock two white shapes and bring the shape selected in the first image to front (Ctrl + Shift + Right Square Bracket). While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the shape added shadow. Then go to the Object/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7). Finally go to the Object menu/ Unlock All (Ctrl + Alt + 2).

9. Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the shape selected in the first image and bring it to front (Ctrl + Shift + Right Square Bracket). Then fill it with the radial gradient.

10. Duplicate the resulting shape once time. Then move anchor points of the newly created shape follow the direction of the white arrows. Finally fill the resulting shape with the radial gradient.

11. Duplicate (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) the resulting shape once time. Fill the newly created shape with none and add a 2px stroke (white color). Then add two anchor points in the positions highlighted with yellow. Next click on the "Cut path at selected anchor points" button from the Properties bar.

12. Remove a part of the shape edited in the previous step to get the result as shown below.

13. Reselect the white shape and go to the Window menu/ Stroke. Then follow the data shown below.

Step 13: Create a hairpin with butterfly shape

1. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a black shape. Switch to the Pen Tool (P) and use this tool to create two curves as shown in the second image. Continue with the Pen Tool (P), use it to create two shapes as shown below.

2. Reselect the magenta shape and go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. In the Offset Path box, enter a -10px Offset and click OK.

3. Select both two magenta shapes and click on the Exclude button from the Pathfinder panel. Then fill the resulting shape with the radial gradient.

4. Reselect the resulting shape and go to the Object menu/ Path/ Offset Path. In the Offset Path, enter a -3px Offset and click OK. Then change color in the gradient panel of the newly created shape as shown below.

5. Do the same with the yellow shape to get the result as shown in the third image.

6. Select all pink shapes and double-click on the Reflect Tool icon from the Tool pallete. Follow the data in the Reflect box as shown below and click Copy. Then move the resulting shapes to positions as shown below.

7. Fill the black ellipse shape with the radial gradient. Add new strokes for both black curves, make them 0.5px wide and set the colors at 5% black.

8. Create shapes as shown below.

9. Select all shapes created in the step G2 (Create a hairpin with butterfly shape) and group them. Rotate this group an angle of about 45 degrees. Now we’ll create shadow of hairpin with butterfly shape. Duplicate the newly created group once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Fill the resulting group with black.

10. Send the newly created group backward (Ctrl + Left Square Bracket). Then lowered its Opacity to 70%. While the resulting group selected, go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. In the Gaussian Blur box, enter a 4.4px Radius and click OK.

11. Select both newly created groups. Then reduce the size of them and place them as shown below.

12. Lock the hairpin group (Ctrl+2). Duplicate the shape selected as shown in the first image once time and then bring the resulting shape to front (Ctrl+Shift + Right Square Bracket). While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the shadow of hairpin group. Then go to the Object menu/ Clipping Mask/ Make (Ctrl+7). At this time, the shadow of hairpin just appear on the head of girl.

Step 14: Create eyes of Girl

1. Copy the eye group of the boy and paste it to new position. While the resulting group selected, double-click on the Reflect Tool icon from the Tool pallete. In the Reflect box, check the Vertical and click OK. Ungroup the resulting group(Ctrl+Shift+U).

2. Change gradient color of the shape as shown below.

3. Continue change colors of the shapes as shown below

4. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to draw three curves as shown in the first image. Then use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) to adjust the eyebrow shape. Finally change the stroke of it as shown in the second image below.

5. Select all shapes created in the step G3 and group them. Duplicate this group once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and move the resulting group to new position. Double-click on the newly created group with the Selection Tool and then select eyelashes and eyebrow shapes of this group. Then double-click on the Reflect Tool icon from the Tool pallete. In the Reflect box, check the Vertical and click OK. Move the resulting shapes to correct positions as shown in the second image below. Finally, double-click on the anywhere outside of the group just edited.

6. Place two eye groups in the positions as shown below.

Step 15: Mouth for girl.

1. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create two shapes as shown below. Then fill the white shape with the radial gradient.

2. Fill the black shape with the linear gradient. Then duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Reduce the size of the resulting shape as shown in the second image and fill it with the linear gradient.

3. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create two white shapes and then fill them as shown below.

4. Continue with the Pen Tool (P), create two curves and then change data of them from the Properties bar as shown below.

5. Reselect the shape selected as shown below. Then go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Follow the data in the Drop Shadow box as shown below and then click OK.

6. Select all shapes created in the step G4 (Mouth of girl) and group them (Ctrl+G). Then reduce the size of this group and place it in the position as shown below.

7. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create two ellipse shapes as shown below. Then fill them with R=237, G=183, B=217.

8. Select both newly created shapes and go to the Effect menu/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur. In the Gaussian Blur box, enter a 30px Radius and click OK. Finally lowered their Opacity to 30%.

Step 16: Body of Girl.

1. Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create a 38 by 45px shape. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the bottom, left anchor point, hold down Shift and press the Left Arrow key twice times. Move to the bottom, right anchor point, select it, hold down Shift and press the Right Arrow key twice times. Now pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on the position highlighted with yellow as shown in the fourth image. Then switch to the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C), click on the anchor point highlighted with yellow, hold down the Shift key and mouse and then drag to the left. Now use the Selection Tool (V) to select the resulting shape and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl +F). While the resulting shape selected, press the Right Arrow key four times and then change color of it to white.

2. Fill the black shape with the linear gradient. Then select the white shape, switch to the Eyedropper Tool (I) and click on the newly fill shape.

3. Create a shape as shown below and then fill it with the linear gradient.

4. Create the yellow shape as shown in the first image and duplicate this shape once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the magenta shape. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. While the newly created shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Enter the data in the Shadow box as shown in the third image and click OK.

5. Reselect the yellow shape and fill it with the linear gradient.

Step 17: Hands

1. Create two red shapes as shown in the first image. Duplicate these two shapes once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Then pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on the positions highlighted with yellow. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), select anchor points highlighted with black and remove them. Change the color of two resulting shapes to white.

2. Select two shapes as shown in the first image and duplicate them once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the resulting shapes selected, press the Left Arrow key six times and then press the Up Arrow key twice times. Then select the white shape selected in the second image and duplicate it once time again. While the resulting shape selected, hold down Shift and click on the with shape next to it. Then click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Select the anchor point highlighted with yellow of the resulting shape and move it to position highlighted with black. In the end your result should look roughly like the fourth image.

4. Use the Pen Tool (P) (R=102, G=45, B=145) to create two magenta shapes as shown in the first image. Now select all shapes created from beginning step G5 to this time and send them back (Ctrl+Shift+ Left Square Bracket).

Step 18: Dresses

1. Create the black shape as shown below and fill it with the linear gradient. Then create the white shape and fill it with the linear gradient.

2. Continue create black and white shapes and fill them with the linear gradient similar to the previous step.

3. Continue with the Pen Tool (P), use this tool to create yellow shape as shown below.

4. Select all yellow shapes and fill them with black (Stroke=None), then lowered their Opacity to 40%.

5. Swicth to the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create black shape as shown below. Fill it with the linear gradient and lowered its Opacity to 80%

6. Continue with the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create white shape as shown below. Fill it with the linear gradient and lowered its Opacity to 80%.

7. Do the same as two previous steps to get the result as shown below

8. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create the black shape as shown below. Then fill it with the radial gradient.

9. While the resulting shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Enter the data in the Drop Shadow box as shown below and click OK.

Step 19: Accessories for dresses

1. Create a black heart shape and duplicate it once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Change the color of the resulting shape to white. Then duplicate this shape once time and reduce the size of the resulting shape as shown in the second image.

2. Select both white shapes and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.

3. Fill the resulting shape with white. Then select the black shape and fill it with the linear gradient.

4. Now select and group all shapes created from beginning step G7 to this time. Then go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Enter the data in the Drop Shadow box as shown below and click OK.

5. Reduce the size of the resulting group and place it to the correct position as shown below.

6. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a circle shape. Fill newly created shape with the radial gradient. Then duplicate it several times and place the resulting shapes in the positions as shown below. Finally select and group all shapes created in this step.

7. While the resulting group selected, go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. Enter the data in the Drop Shadow box as shown below and click OK.

Step 20: Legs for girl.

1. Create two black shapes as shown in the first image below. Duplicate two shapes once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F), then change their color to white and move them to positions as shown in the second image.

Step 21: Create shoes

1. Select two shapes selected as shown in the first image and duplicate them once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). While the resulting shapes selected, click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel. Then switch to the Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and click on the two positions highlighted with yellow. Next, select anchor points highlighted with red and remove them. Finally, use the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C) to adjust the handles of anchor points highlighted with yellow to get the result as shown in the third image.

3. While the resulting shape selected, duplicate it once time and remove two anchor points highlighted with red. Finally fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient.

4. Duplicate the shape selected in the first image once time (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F) and fill it with dark magenta (R=102, G=45, B=145). Switch to the Selection Tool (V) and reselect the magenta shape and then press the Down Arrow key once time. Next, send it backward (Ctrl+Left Square Bracket). While the resulting shape selected, move to white square of the left edge, click on and drag this square to the right a bit.

5. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a black shape as shown below. Then fill this shape with the linear gradient.

6. With the resulting shape selected, go to the Effect menu/ Stylize/ Drop Shadow. In the Drop Shadown box, enter data as
shown below and click OK.

7. Pick the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create three black shapes as shown in the first image below. Select all three shapes and follow the data as shown below.

8. Select and group (Ctrl + G) all shapes created from beginning step G9 to this time.While the resulting group selected, double-click on the Reflect Tool icon from the Tool pallete. In the Reflect box, check the Vertical and click Copy. Place the resulting group in the correct position as shown below.
